Man Charged with Rape and Drugging in Southampton

A Sri Lankan national is set to appear in court today, accused of drugging and raping a 19-year-old woman in Southampton. Viaan Surendranathan, aged 21, was formally charged yesterday with the rape of the young woman and for administering a drug with the intent to stupefy her for sexual activity.

Additional Drug Possession Charge

In addition to the serious sexual assault allegations, Surendranathan was also charged with possessing a class A drug. The accused, who has been residing in Southampton, has been remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear before magistrates later today.

Police Investigation Details

Last week, law enforcement authorities received a report alleging that a woman had been raped at an address in the Polygon area of Southampton. A police spokesman provided further details, stating, 'Officers investigating a rape in Southampton have charged a man. We received a report that on Thursday, February 5, a 19-year-old woman had been raped at an address in the Polygon area of Southampton.'

The victim is currently receiving support from the police as the investigation continues. Surendranathan is expected to make his appearance at Southampton Magistrates Court later today, where the legal proceedings will commence.
