Spanish police are investigating the mysterious deaths of an Irish couple who were found semi-naked inside a property on the Costa Blanca. The grim discovery was made yesterday morning after a concerned neighbour raised the alarm.

Officers from the Civil Guard arrived at the house on Avenida Escorpiones – which translates to Scorpions Avenue – in the Torrevieja municipality just after 10am. They found the man and woman in a state of undress. The man was found with a head injury and is believed to have died around a week ago. The woman, who was reportedly still alive when the first emergency services arrived, had wounds to her chest and limbs. Tragically, she died shortly afterwards at the scene.

The Civil Guard has launched a full investigation, which is being overseen by a local court. No official statement has been released, but one is expected later today. A well-placed source indicated that early theories suggest the man may have died of natural causes. The woman was described locally as having certain 'limitations', which may have prevented her from raising the alarm herself after her companion died.

In that case, social services staff raised the alarm after the vulnerable couple, who suffered from chronic illnesses, failed to answer calls.
