Hundreds of Police Raid Ahmadi Sect in Crewe Abuse Probe

Hundreds of police officers have conducted a major raid on a religious community in Cheshire as part of an investigation into serious allegations including sexual abuse, forced marriage, and modern slavery.

Massive Police Operation in Crewe

Approximately 500 officers were deployed in Crewe, Cheshire, targeting suspects believed to be members of the Ahmadi Religion of Peace and Light. The group has its headquarters at Webb House, a former orphanage in the town, where around 150 people reside.

Cheshire Police confirmed that a number of arrests have been made, and the operation is ongoing. Two additional properties linked to suspects in the local area have also been searched.

Background of the Investigation

The raids follow a complaint made by a woman in March this year, who alleged she was raped and sexually abused while part of the Ahmadi religious community in 2023. All reported offences involve a single victim.

Chief Superintendent Gareth Wrigley of Cheshire Constabulary stated: “Today’s operation is the outcome of a detailed and robust investigation into reports of serious sexual offences, forced marriage and modern slavery involving members of a religious group called Ahmadi Religion of Peace and Light in Crewe.” He emphasised that the investigation is into the allegations, not the religion itself.

Safeguarding and Community Reassurance

Welfare centres have been set up to safeguard 56 children, all of whom are home-schooled and part of the local Ahmadi community. Police are working with partners to provide advice and support to other group members.

Chief Superintendent Wrigley added: “I would like to reassure residents that there is no risk to the wider community, and patrols have been stepped up to provide reassurance. I would urge anyone with any concerns to speak to an officer.”

The Ahmadi group moved to Cheshire from Sweden in 2021, purchasing Webb House as their base.
