Sunderland completed a memorable Tyne-Wear derby double over Newcastle United thanks to Brian Brobbey's last-gasp winner. The forward struck in the 90th minute to seal a 2-1 comeback victory at St James' Park.
Anthony Gordon had given Newcastle the lead in the first half after a defensive mix-up from a Sunderland goal kick. Luke O'Nein's pass was intercepted, and Gordon fired into the bottom corner. Newcastle nearly doubled their lead before the break when Sven Botman hit the post.
Sunderland equalised in the second half through Chemsdine Talbi, who drilled home from close range after a corner caused confusion in the Newcastle box. The hosts thought they had regained the lead when Malick Thiaw headed in from a corner, but the goal was ruled out due to Jacob Murphy standing in an offside position.
Brobbey then turned home Enzo Le Fee's cross via a deflection from Aaron Ramsdale to spark wild celebrations among the travelling supporters. The win lifts Sunderland to 11th, leapfrogging Newcastle into 12th.
The match was briefly halted due to an allegation of discriminatory abuse aimed at Sunderland's Lutscharel Geertruida, while there were violent clashes between fans outside the stadium beforehand.
