Five Puzzling Clues Emerge in Search for Missing Brazilian Psychologist After 23 Days
Essex Police have shared several critical updates with the public regarding the disappearance of Vitoria Figueiredo Barreto, a 30-year-old Brazilian psychologist who vanished more than three weeks ago near Colchester, Essex. The academic was last seen on March 3, and despite extensive searches across a "hugely significant area of land and coastline," she remains missing, with investigators highlighting five key mysteries in the case.
Mystery 1: The Bus Journey to Brightlingsea
Police confirmed that CCTV footage captured Barreto boarding the 87 bus on Boundary Road in Wivenhoe just after 1pm on March 3. She disembarked 30 minutes later in Bellfield Avenue, Brightlingsea, a coastal town. The footage shows her travelling alone, but the reason for her trip to Brightlingsea remains unclear, adding to the enigma of her disappearance.
Mystery 2: The Unmoored Boat and Boatyard CCTV
Essex Police revealed they have CCTV footage of a person, believed to be Barreto, jumping over a fence into a boat yard in Brightlingsea. Authorities suspect she may have taken a boat from a seaside town pontoon in the early hours of March 4. Detective Superintendent Anna Granger stated, "We're working to narrow the CCTV gap from 12.16am on March 4 and the time at which we know a person unmoors a fishing boat from a pontoon, at about 12.36am." However, there is still no conclusive evidence to confirm it was Barreto who unmoored the vessel.
Mystery 3: Latest CCTV Sightings and Expanded Search
In a recent update, police expanded their CCTV search in Brightlingsea, focusing on the hours between 2.35pm on March 3 and 12.16am on March 4. They now believe there is a sighting of Barreto on land between Back Waterside Lane and Mill Street at 3.33pm on March 3. Additionally, investigators are attempting to access her phone and banking data, registered outside the UK, to aid the investigation. Granger noted, "We know this international work has the support of Vitoria's loved ones and the Brazilian Embassy."
Mystery 4: The Found Laptop and Bag
A laptop believed to belong to Barreto was discovered in Brightlingsea on March 14, but no further updates have been provided on whether it yielded any clues. Police also reported that a bag owned by the missing woman was found near Copperas Road on March 9, yet its contents and relevance to the case remain unspecified.
Mystery 5: Disturbing Human Trafficking Theory
One of Barreto's friends, Fernanda Silvestre, expressed fears that she may have fallen victim to human trafficking. Silvestre told Brazilian media that Barreto's phone was paired with hers and activated an emergency mode, sending a signal that pointed to the sea. She said, "Her mum is in London and they are taking the necessary steps but due to the seriousness of the situation, searches need to be carried out at sea and other European countries need to be alerted because from the clues we have, we realise this may be a case of human trafficking."
Barreto was last seen wearing a dark coat, a blue turtleneck jumper, light blue jeans, and black trainers. She was reported missing on March 4 after stopping contact with loved ones. The search continues as Essex Police urge anyone with information to come forward, emphasizing the complexity of the case with these five unresolved clues.
