FBI Director Kash Patel is facing mounting scrutiny and public criticism after mobile phone footage surfaced showing him enthusiastically celebrating with the United States men's hockey team in Milan. The incident occurred on Sunday, 20 February, following the team's gold medal victory against Canada at the Winter Olympics.
Controversial Celebration Amid Serious Investigations
The video, obtained by a ProPublica reporter, depicts Patel wearing a white USA hockey shirt with a gold medal around his neck. He is seen drinking from a bottle and spraying beer in the locker room as the team sings Toby Keith's patriotic song Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue. This festive scene has sparked significant backlash, given the numerous high-profile investigations currently underway at the FBI.
Ongoing FBI Cases Overshadowed
Patel's agency is actively handling several critical cases, including the shooting death of an armed intruder at Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago residence and the extensive search for missing person Nancy Guthrie, mother of Today co-host Savannah Guthrie. Additionally, the FBI continues to manage the ongoing controversy surrounding the release of documents related to the Jeffrey Epstein case.
In light of these pressing matters, the emergence of the celebratory footage has led to accusations of unprofessional conduct. Xochitl Hinojosa, former head of public affairs at the US Department of Justice, voiced a common sentiment, questioning, "and our FBI Director thinks he's a frat bro?!"
Official Business or Personal Trip?
Patel's spokesperson, Ben Williamson, has firmly defended the director's presence in Milan, asserting that the trip was pre-planned official business. Williamson clarified that Patel traveled on a justice department plane and had scheduled meetings with Italian law enforcement officials and the US ambassador to Italy.
This justification follows earlier reports from CBS News suggesting Patel used an FBI jet to attend the Olympic hockey games. Williamson countered these claims, stating, "This is not a personal trip. Director Patel is on a trip that was planned months ago."
Patel's Response and Further Criticism
Responding to the growing controversy on social media platform X, Patel portrayed himself as a patriotic supporter misunderstood by critics. He wrote, "I love America and was extremely humbled when my friends, the newly minted Gold Medal winners on Team USA, invited me into the locker room. Greatest country on earth and greatest sport on earth."
However, this explanation did not satisfy all observers. Kyle Seraphin, a former FBI agent and right-wing podcast host, directly challenged Patel's actions in the comments, labeling them as "Misuse of Official Position."
Pattern of Controversial Behavior
This incident is not an isolated one for Patel, who has faced similar accusations since being sworn in as FBI director in late February 2025. In November, he was embroiled in another controversy after using an FBI jet to travel to Pennsylvania to watch his girlfriend, country singer Alexis Wilkins, perform the national anthem at a wrestling match.
These repeated episodes have raised questions about Patel's judgment and his ability to separate professional responsibilities from personal interests. As an avid hockey fan, his passion for the sport is clear, but critics argue that such visible celebrations undermine the serious image expected of the nation's top law enforcement official.
The ongoing scrutiny highlights the delicate balance public figures must maintain between personal enthusiasm and professional decorum, particularly when representing agencies under intense public and media examination.
