Ex-Man Utd and Liverpool Player Among Four Charged in Shooting

A former footballer who spent time in the academies of both Manchester United and Liverpool is among four individuals now facing serious charges, including attempted murder, following a violent shooting incident in Huyton, Liverpool. The victim, a man in his twenties, sustained critical leg injuries after being shot twice on a driveway on Radway Road on Friday, November 28.

Coordinated Police Operation Leads to Arrests

In a coordinated effort, Merseyside Police executed warrants across Knowsley, Sefton, and Liverpool on Thursday, February 19, resulting in the arrests of four suspects. The operation was part of an ongoing investigation into the shooting, which left the victim in a life-threatening condition and required urgent hospital treatment.

Charges and Court Appearance

Patrick Sean Lacey, aged 32 and residing on Manor Avenue in Crosby, has been formally charged with multiple offences. These include attempted murder, conspiracy to murder, possession of a shotgun and ammunition with intent to endanger life, section 18 grievous bodily harm (GBH), and conspiracy to cause GBH.

Joining Lacey in the charges are Johan Aaron Jones, 35, of Stamfordham Drive in Allerton; John George Patrick Hughes, 31, who has no fixed abode; and Bernard Flynn, 61, of Knowsley Road in Bottle. All four men are scheduled to appear at the Liverpool, Knowsley, Sefton, and St Helens Adult Remand Court this morning, Friday, February 20.

Patrick Lacey's Background in Football and Boxing

Patrick Lacey began his football career with Tranmere Rovers before moving through the youth systems of Manchester United and Liverpool. He later played for several clubs, including Chester, Altrincham, Barrow, Accrington Stanley, and Southport, with his most recent team believed to be Flint Town.

In addition to his football pursuits, Lacey also had a professional boxing career, maintaining an undefeated record of 10-0. His most recent bout was a knockout victory over Owen Kirk in October 2023.

Police Appeal for Information

Detective Inspector Chris Clark from Merseyside Police's Firearms Investigation Team emphasised the importance of public cooperation in the ongoing investigation. He stated, "These coordinated warrants were carried out as part of an ongoing investigation, and all four men will appear in court today. Our work continues, so I would ask that people who have yet to come forward still do so."

He further urged, "Please do not assume that we already hold information. Our team will make that assessment, and will take the appropriate action. Whether you have a first-hand account, dashcam, CCTV, doorbell or other footage, come forward."
