Eleven Arrested in France Over Killing of Far-Right Activist Quentin Deranque

Eleven individuals, including an aide to a French far-left lawmaker, have been arrested in France on suspicion of involvement in the killing of a far-right activist. The arrests were conducted overnight and into Wednesday morning, following the death of Quentin Deranque, a 23-year-old far-right activist, who died on Saturday after being beaten by hard-left activists outside a conference centre in Lyon.

Political Tensions Escalate After Fatal Incident

The incident occurred at a venue where Rima Hassan, a member of the European Parliament from the hard-left France Unbowed (LFI) party, was speaking. Videos of the confrontation have been widely circulated on social media, drawing national attention. In response, the Lyon prosecutors' office has opened a murder investigation, confirming the detention of 11 suspects so far.

Among those arrested is an aide to LFI lawmaker Raphael Arnault, who stated on Tuesday that the aide had "stopped all parliamentary work." Arnault added on X, "It is now up to the investigation to determine responsibility." The arrests have intensified political divisions, with both hard-left and hard-right groups leveraging frustration with the minority centrist government ahead of upcoming local elections next month and a presidential vote next year.

Bomb Threat and Condemnations Follow Arrests

Shortly after the arrests were announced, the Paris headquarters of the LFI party received a bomb threat, leading to an evacuation. Police secured the scene, and an all-clear was later given. Manuel Bompard, the LFI's national coordinator, told reporters on Wednesday that his party was not responsible for Deranque's death and expressed that the party now feels threatened itself.

In contrast, Jordan Bardella, party president of the far-right National Rally, has accused LFI leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon of opening the "doors of the National Assembly to presumed murderers." Rima Hassan and other LFI members have publicly condemned the killing, highlighting the volatile and polarised political environment in France.

This case underscores the escalating tensions between extremist factions in French politics, with authorities continuing their investigation into the murder amid heightened security concerns and public outcry.
