A Nottingham drug dealer has been jailed after a dramatic police chase on an illegal electric scooter culminated in a crash on a busy city road. Graham McCarthy, 43, was involved in a frantic 10-minute pursuit with officers, during which he dangerously weaved through traffic and pedestrians while refusing to stop.
Dangerous Pursuit Through Nottingham Streets
The incident unfolded when police attempted to stop McCarthy, who was believed to have connections to drug supply operations. Instead of complying, he accelerated the e-scooter, initiating a high-speed chase through Nottingham's streets. Witnesses reported seeing the suspect recklessly navigating between vehicles and pedestrians, creating significant risk to public safety.
Crash Ends Chaotic Chase
The pursuit came to an abrupt end when McCarthy, travelling at speeds exceeding 20 miles per hour, attempted to overtake a bus. He lost control of the electric scooter, tumbling onto the roadway in a dramatic crash that brought the dangerous episode to a close. Police quickly apprehended him at the scene.
Multiple Charges and Substantial Sentence
McCarthy pleaded guilty to a series of offences including dangerous driving, driving without insurance, driving without a licence, criminal damage, and possessing Class B drugs with intent to supply. Nottingham magistrates handed down a 75-week prison sentence and disqualified him from driving for 19 months.
The case highlights growing concerns about illegal e-scooter use on public roads and the potential for such vehicles to facilitate criminal activity. Police have emphasised that electric scooters remain illegal for use on roads and pavements unless part of approved rental schemes, with this incident demonstrating the serious consequences of flouting these regulations.
