Drug Dealer Convicted of Manslaughter in Fatal 15-Stab Attack
A drug dealer has been convicted of manslaughter after fatally stabbing a man 15 times during a violent altercation in north Manchester. Martin Davies, aged 36, was unanimously found guilty by a jury at Manchester Crown Court for the killing of 28-year-old Kailem Gibson, though he was acquitted of murder charges.
Deadly Dispute Over Drug Dealing Arrangements
The tragic incident unfolded in late August last year at a flat on Gilmerton Drive in Newton Heath, where Davies had allowed Kailem Gibson and his girlfriend to reside. In exchange for shelter, both individuals had experienced periods of homelessness and were required to sell the synthetic drug Spice on Davies' behalf and hand over portions of their state benefits.
Tensions escalated dramatically when Kailem challenged the exploitative arrangement and informed Davies he would no longer work for him. Additionally, his girlfriend ceased transferring her £400 disability benefit to Davies, redirecting it to the actual tenant of the property instead.
Violent Confrontation Leads to Fatal Injuries
Prosecutor Tim Storrie KC detailed how Davies felt "betrayed" by the couple's actions, with witnesses reporting him expressing feelings of being "stabbed in the back." Approximately an hour later, around 7:20 pm on August 29, violence erupted in the bedroom of the flat.
Kailem Gibson suffered 15 separate stab wounds or slashes during the attack, with two of the most severe injuries located in his chest and neck. His girlfriend intervened to help him escape the property, but he succumbed to his injuries the following day in hospital.
Court Proceedings and Defendant's Claims
During the trial, Davies claimed he acted in self-defence, alleging that Kailem had intended to attack him with a hammer. However, the jury rejected this defence, finding him guilty of manslaughter while clearing him of murder charges.
The court also acquitted Davies of two counts of assaulting Kailem's girlfriend and one count of possessing an offensive weapon in a private place. Following the violent incident, Davies fled the scene with his stock of Spice but returned hours later, where police promptly arrested him.
Heartbreaking Family Tribute
In a moving statement, Kailem Gibson's family described him as a "deeply loved son, brother, father, boyfriend, nephew, cousin and friend" who touched lives with his warm smile and kind spirit. They remembered him as someone who "never hesitated to help anyone in need" and whose legacy would live on in the hearts of those who knew him.
The family's tribute poignantly concluded: "Forever 28, forever loved, never forgotten."
Sentencing and Case Details
Prosecutors revealed that Davies had established himself as the "dominant" force in the household, occupying the only bedroom while orchestrating drug supply operations from the property. Evidence presented in court indicated his drug business was prosperous, with approximately £29,000 discovered hidden nearby.
Martin Davies now faces a substantial prison sentence, with formal sentencing scheduled for next month. The case has highlighted the dangerous dynamics within exploitative living arrangements connected to drug distribution networks in urban areas.
