Cleveland Police have arrested a driver following a dramatic incident on a busy Teesside road this week. The event unfolded on Westminster Road in Middlesbrough, where a car reportedly mounted the pavement, causing significant alarm.
Officers were called to the scene at approximately 16:15 GMT on Wednesday to reports of a collision. Upon arrival, they located a vehicle that had left the carriageway. The driver, a man, was subsequently arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving.
The police response was substantial, leading to the closure of Westminster Road in both directions between its junctions with Longlands Road and Abingdon Road. This caused considerable disruption for evening commuters, with motorists advised to find alternative routes while investigators worked at the scene.
A spokesperson for Cleveland Police confirmed the arrest, stating: "A man was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and has been released under investigation whilst enquiries continue."
Authorities are now appealing to the public for information. They are particularly keen to speak to any witnesses who saw the events leading up to the incident or the vehicle itself prior to the collision. Anyone with information, including dashcam or CCTV footage, is urged to contact Cleveland Police.
