DHS Employee Fatally Attacked During Morning Dog Walk
A Department of Homeland Security employee was brutally killed while walking her dog on Monday morning, as part of what police describe as a "completely random" crime spree that left two people dead and another critically injured across DeKalb County. Lauren Bullis, a 40-year-old auditor at the federal agency, was shot and stabbed on Battle Forest Drive during her regular morning routine, according to authorities.
Suspect Tracked Through Multiple Jurisdictions
Investigators utilized an extensive network of license plate recognition technology to trace the suspect's movements through several jurisdictions. The suspect, Olaolukitan Adon Abel, 26, was driving a rented silver Volkswagen Jetta which was tracked from the crime scenes to his eventual arrest in Troup County, Georgia.
Police Chief Brandon Gurley of Brookhaven emphasized the random nature of the attacks, stating there appeared to be no connection between the victims and their assailant. The violent spree began with the fatal shooting of an unidentified woman outside a Checkers restaurant on Wesley Chapel Road, followed by the attack on Bullis, and concluded with the shooting of a man sleeping outside a Kroger in Brookhaven who remains in critical condition.
Suspect's Criminal History and Citizenship Status
Abel, a naturalized citizen originally from the United Kingdom who attained citizenship in 2022, has a documented criminal history. Records show he was convicted of sexual battery in Chatham County in 2025 and was sentenced to jail time followed by probation that included a mandatory mental health evaluation. At the time of Monday's attacks, he was reportedly still on active probation.
DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin confirmed Bullis's death in a statement to Fox News, describing her as a valued employee who was "brutally shot and stabbed to death" by Abel. The secretary noted the agency was cooperating fully with law enforcement investigations into the tragic incident.
Community Mourns Loss of Active Member
Neighbors and family members have described Bullis as a friendly, active community member who was frequently seen on her daily morning walks and runs. Her cousin Lee Renfroe memorialized her on social media, writing: "She was such a special person and will always live in our hearts. We love you and miss you Lauren. Please say a prayer for our families as well as the families of the other victims."
Investigators continue to review evidence to determine a motive and understand how the specific locations were selected for the attacks. Authorities have not yet publicly identified the first woman killed or the man injured outside the Kroger, as next of kin notifications are pending.
Legal Proceedings and Ongoing Investigation
Abel waived his first court appearance on Tuesday and is currently being held at the DeKalb County jail. He faces multiple charges including murder, aggravated assault, and weapons violations. Police indicate the investigation remains active and additional charges may be filed as more evidence is examined.
The use of automated license plate reader technology proved crucial in this investigation, allowing law enforcement to quickly track the suspect's vehicle across county lines. This technology has become increasingly important in modern policing for tracking suspects in multi-jurisdictional crimes.
