Police have launched an investigation after reports that a car was deliberately driven at a group of men during a mass brawl in Paignton. Officers were called to Esplanade Road at 8:15 AM on Thursday following reports of a physical altercation involving at least four individuals, during which a vehicle was allegedly used as a weapon.
The incident took place near the Hyde Dendy pub, which was closed at the time and is not believed to be connected to the disturbance. Witnesses described a chaotic scene, with police quickly swarming the area and searching for a car that has now reportedly been seized.
Witness Accounts
Ian Pagel, owner of the nearby Sealawn Guest House, said he observed what he described as a "fight involving a group of adults." He recounted: "A car tried to drive into the crowd and run them over. Then the police were called. I looked out of the window and saw the police arrive. They were looking at all the cars parked around the area, checking number plates."
Another witness told DevonLive that she saw four men fighting, with one man getting into a car and driving at another. She said: "There was a group of men fighting, punching each other. One was in a car and got out and started fighting with the others." She added that one man removed his shirt, revealing a large cross tattoo covering his back, before squaring up to the others. He then entered the car and "sped off as if he was going to run over a man, but the guy got out of the way."
Police Response
Devon and Cornwall Police have confirmed they are investigating the incident. A spokesperson said: "We were called at 8:15 AM to reports of a fight involving several men on Esplanade Road. It was also alleged that a car was driven at people during the altercation. Officers attended and the area was searched. A vehicle has been seized as part of the inquiry." No arrests have been reported at this stage, and enquiries are ongoing.
