Bulldogs Legends Unite in Support After Former Star Matt Utai Shot in Sydney
Former Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs winger Matt Utai is fighting for his life in hospital after a brazen early-morning drive-by shooting in Sydney's southwest. The 44-year-old rugby league veteran was struck by multiple bullets outside his Greenacre home on Tuesday morning, leaving him in a critical condition following emergency surgery.
Targeted Attack Leaves Premiership Hero in Critical Condition
Emergency services rushed to the scene around 6am after reports of gunfire in the quiet suburban street. Paramedics treated Utai for serious wounds to his upper body and leg before transporting him to hospital in a serious condition. Police have confirmed the shooting appears to be targeted, establishing crime scenes in both Greenacre and nearby Wiley Park where a burnt-out SUV was later discovered.
Detectives are now investigating the motive behind the violent attack and whether Utai was the intended target. The former NRL star remains in a critical but stable condition according to teammates, with medical staff reporting he is breathing on his own following extensive emergency surgery.
Bulldogs Brotherhood Rallies Around Fallen Teammate
The shocking news has united Utai's former Bulldogs teammates, with premiership-winning players from the club's golden era expressing their devastation and support. Former halfback Brent Sherwin praised Utai's legendary toughness, telling media: 'He was a massive part of our team, not just scoring tries, but taking the hard carries on our own line. He never shirked away from any of it, he put his hand up and took it all. He had a big heart. We're praying he will be OK.'
Premiership-winning prop Mark O'Meley revealed the Bulldogs' group chat had been lighting up with messages of support all morning. 'Everyone has been on the group chat all morning, we just hope he's OK,' O'Meley said, highlighting the strong bonds that remain between members of the 2004 premiership-winning squad.
A Distinguished Rugby League Career
Matt Utai made his NRL debut with the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs in 2002 and quickly established himself as one of the competition's most formidable wingers despite his relatively small stature. His career highlight came in 2004 when he scored two crucial tries in the Bulldogs' Grand Final victory over the Sydney Roosters, cementing his place in club history.
During his peak years, Utai was consistently among the NRL's top try-scorers, regularly finishing as one of the Bulldogs' leading finishers. His powerful running style and remarkable durability made him a fan favourite and respected opponent throughout the competition.
The talented winger also enjoyed international success, earning selection for New Zealand after his breakthrough season before switching allegiance to Samoa and representing them at the 2008 Rugby League World Cup, where he scored two tries in three matches.
Later Career and Retirement
Injuries began to impact Utai's career in the latter stages of his Bulldogs tenure, and he departed the club in 2009 after several disrupted seasons. A planned move to Super League outfit Celtic Crusaders fell through in 2010 due to ongoing injury concerns, before he resurrected his career with the Wests Tigers in 2011.
Utai played with the Tigers until retiring at the end of the 2013 season, finishing his distinguished NRL career with 85 tries in 167 appearances across his time with both Canterbury and Wests. His former teammate Reni Maitua provided the latest update on Utai's condition, saying: 'He's breathing on his own, and they've said he's critical but stable. I'm just really shocked and saddened by the news. I know it's shaken up all the boys.'
As police continue their investigation into the motive behind the targeted shooting, the rugby league community holds its breath, hoping for positive news about one of the game's most respected former players.
