Bristol student dies, five arrested on suspicion of murder

A murder investigation has been launched following the death of a university student from Bristol who was found with serious injuries on a street in Worcester.

Discovery and Arrests

Vijay Kumar, aged 30, was discovered on Barbourne Road in Worcester at approximately 4.15am on Tuesday, 25 November. The young man, understood to be a student at a university in Bristol, was taken to hospital but sadly died later that same day.

In response, West Mercia Police arrested five men on suspicion of murder. All five have since been released on police bail while enquiries continue. A sixth man was also arrested but was released with no further action to be taken.

Family's Heartbreaking Tribute

Vijay's devastated family have paid an emotional tribute to him, describing a man who filled their lives with warmth and energy. In a statement, they said he brought joy and laughter and lived with purpose and passion.

"Behind all his gestures was a heart that cared deeply for his family and friends," the statement read. "He didn’t always say it, but he showed it—in small gestures, shared glances, and unexpected kindness. His tragic departure has left us devastated and has created a void in our lives."

Police Investigation and Community Reassurance

Detective Chief Inspector Lee Holehouse, speaking on 28 November, confirmed that extensive enquiries are ongoing to piece together the events of that Tuesday morning. He sought to reassure the local community in Worcester.

"Officers will remain on Barbourne Road over the weekend, and I would like to reassure the community that this is to continue gathering evidence and the public should not be alarmed," DCI Holehouse stated.

He reiterated an appeal for information, urging anyone with details, however insignificant they may seem, to come forward. "Our thoughts remain with the family and friends of the man who has died," he added.

The investigation remains active as police work to establish the full circumstances leading to this tragic loss of life.
