Major Police Operation in Bristol After Shooting Incident
A significant police investigation is underway in Bristol following a shooting incident that resulted in a man being hospitalised with potentially life-changing injuries. The event triggered a large-scale manhunt and precautionary lockdowns at three local schools, causing considerable disruption and concern within the community.
Incident Details and Immediate Response
The incident occurred on Speedwell Road in Bristol at approximately 1.47pm on Wednesday afternoon. According to Avon and Somerset Police, a firearm was discharged at a car, leading to a victim being rushed to hospital with serious injuries. The force has confirmed that the injured man remains in hospital, with his condition described as potentially life-altering.
In response to the shooting, police launched an extensive operation involving multiple specialised units. The National Police Air Service helicopter was deployed, circling the city for about ninety minutes, while specially-trained firearms officers and drone units were mobilised to assist in the search for suspects. An air ambulance was also seen landing at Barton Fields Park around 2.30pm as part of the emergency response.
School Lockdowns and Community Impact
As a precautionary measure, three nearby educational institutions were placed into lockdown during the police operation. Bristol Brunel Academy, Two Mile Hill Primary School, and Chester Park Infant School all implemented lockdown procedures, with pupils and staff required to remain on site until given clearance by authorities.
In communications to parents, school administrators emphasised that the lockdowns were precautionary measures taken in consultation with police. Two Mile Hill Primary School stated in an email: 'Due to a serious incident in the local area, Two Mile Hill Primary has been placed into lockdown as a precaution. During this time, no one will be able to enter or leave the school site.' The school acknowledged the timing near the end of the school day might cause inconvenience but stressed that student safety was the highest priority.
Similarly, Bristol Brunel Academy informed parents that they were following police guidance, with all staff and students remaining safely inside the building while awaiting further instructions from authorities.
Arrests and Ongoing Investigation
The police operation resulted in three arrests in connection with the incident. Around 2.30am on Thursday morning, a man in his twenties was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. Subsequently, another man and a woman, both also in their twenties, were taken into custody on suspicion of assisting an offender.
A police spokesperson provided an update on the situation: 'Officers have been working since the incident occurred to identify and locate the individual responsible, and three people are now in police custody.' The force has indicated that they are not currently seeking any additional suspects in connection with the shooting.
Despite the arrests, a police cordon remains in place at St Anne's Woods near Brislington, and authorities have warned the public to expect a heightened police presence in both that area and the Speedwell district of Bristol. The force has reassured residents that while the incident was concerning, significant resources have been deployed to ensure public safety.
