Teenager Hospitalised After Falling Through Skylight at Abandoned Debenhams
A 14-year-old boy has sustained multiple injuries after plunging through a skylight at a derelict building in Plymouth. The incident occurred at the disused Debenhams store on Royal Parade, prompting a major emergency response.
Emergency Services Rush to Scene
Devon and Cornwall Police were alerted by ambulance services at 5.35pm on Thursday, February 19, following reports of a teenage boy falling through the roof of the vacant retail premises. The youth, who is from Plymouth, was climbing when he fell approximately 15 feet to the third floor of the building.
Emergency crews including ambulance and fire services attended the location promptly. The teenager was transported to Derriford Hospital for treatment. Police have confirmed that while he sustained multiple injuries, none are currently described as life-changing or life-threatening.
Police Issue Stern Warning About Urban Exploration Dangers
Inspector Greg Bridgett emphasised the significant hazards associated with derelict structures. He stated that the former Debenhams store has been disused for "some time" and has become "extremely hazardous" in certain areas.
The force has issued a clear warning to children and teenagers about the perils of climbing around empty or abandoned buildings. Inspector Bridgett urged young people "not to be tempted by this dangerous pastime."
Police revealed they will adopt a "robust approach" towards any individuals discovered in derelict buildings. They are collaborating with Plymouth City Council and building owners to address security issues surrounding vacant properties.
Rise of Urban Exploration Content Online
The incident highlights growing concerns about so-called "urban explorers" who frequently access dangerous derelict sites to create content. Individuals have been filming inside the Plymouth Debenhams building and sharing their adventures on platforms like Facebook and YouTube.
Authorities stress that such activities pose serious safety risks and legal consequences. The abandoned store's deteriorating condition makes it particularly dangerous for unauthorized entry.
This alarming event serves as a stark reminder of the potential consequences when curiosity overrides safety considerations in urban environments.
