A 13-year-old boy has been taken into custody following an attack on police officers involving petrol bombs and masonry in Londonderry. The incident occurred on Tuesday evening in the Bishop Street area, where a group of masked youths had reportedly gathered.
Details of the Incident
The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) confirmed that officers were called to the scene at approximately 5:30pm after receiving reports of disorder. Upon arrival, they were met with a barrage of glass bottles, fireworks, petrol bombs, and masonry thrown at police vehicles. Bishop Street was temporarily closed to manage the situation, causing disruption to local residents.
A PSNI spokesperson stated: "Bishop Street was closed temporarily to deal with the disorder, causing disruption and fear yet again to the local communities. A number of glass bottles were thrown, with fireworks also set off and petrol bombs and masonry thrown at police vehicles."
Arrest and Investigation
The 13-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of riotous behaviour. He has since been released on bail pending further police enquiries. The PSNI has launched an investigation to identify all individuals involved in the disorder, which follows similar incidents in the past week.
"An investigation is underway to identify all those involved, and we will take action against anyone identified as committing offences," the spokesperson added.
