Bolsonaro's Health Improves, House Arrest Sentence Now Possible
Bolsonaro Health Better, Could Serve Sentence at Home

Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has been moved to a regular hospital room in Brasilia as his recovery from pneumonia progresses, according to a statement from one of his doctors on Monday. This positive health update coincides with a significant legal development, as Brazil's attorney general has formally recommended that the far-right leader serve his lengthy prison sentence under house arrest rather than behind bars.

Health Recovery and Hospital Transfer

Dr. Brasil Caiado confirmed to reporters in the capital that Bolsonaro was transferred from semi-intensive care to a standard hospital room, marking a notable improvement in his condition. The 71-year-old former president was initially hospitalized on March 13 after falling ill at the Papuda penitentiary in Brasilia, where he has been serving a 27-year sentence for leading a coup attempt in 2023. Three days later, his condition necessitated placement in semi-intensive care due to the severity of the pneumonia.

There is currently no established discharge date for Bolsonaro, as medical teams continue to monitor his recovery closely. His hospitalization followed a transfer in January from the local federal police headquarters to a larger cell, amid ongoing health concerns raised by his family and political allies.

Legal Pathway to House Arrest

In a decision published earlier on Monday, Attorney General Paulo Gonet agreed with requests from Bolsonaro's family and suggested to Justice Alexandre de Moraes that the former president should be allowed to serve his sentence at home with an ankle monitor. Gonet cited the former leader's clinical evolution and the recommendations of his medical team as key factors in this proposal.

"The clinical evolution of the former president, as shown by the medical team that took care of him in the latest incident, recommends house imprisonment," Gonet stated in his official decision. This move paves the way for a potential shift from prison confinement to house arrest, pending a ruling from Justice de Moraes, who oversaw Bolsonaro's coup case and typically aligns with Gonet's suggestions.

Background and Ongoing Legal Battle

Bolsonaro, who governed Brazil from 2019 to 2022, began serving his 27-year sentence in November after being convicted for his role in orchestrating a coup attempt in 2023. His family and allies have repeatedly petitioned Brazil's Supreme Court to permit him to carry out his sentence under house arrest, citing health issues and the need for better medical care.

The attorney general's recommendation represents a critical juncture in this legal battle, offering a potential compromise that balances judicial requirements with health considerations. As Bolsonaro's recovery continues, all eyes are now on Justice de Moraes for a final decision that could significantly alter the conditions of the former president's incarceration.
