Bipolar Influencer Detained After Alleged Knife Attack on Boyfriend in Denver

Mia Zaffarano, a 27-year-old social media personality who frequently documented her mental health struggles online, has been arrested in Colorado following a violent incident where she allegedly stabbed her boyfriend during a drunken altercation. The Denver resident, who works as a professional phlebotomist, was taken into custody on Monday after the alleged assault on her partner Joey Bocian, 24.

Drunken Argument Escalates to Violent Confrontation

According to Bocian's account to the Daily Mail, the couple had been drinking tequila with a friend in their apartment when the situation turned violent. The argument reportedly began after Bocian mocked Zaffarano for sharing a story about "doing nitrous from a condom," which he described as disgusting. "I told her that was disgusting, and something just snapped," Bocian alleged, explaining that his girlfriend suddenly flew into a rage.

The confrontation quickly intensified as Zaffarano began punching and kicking Bocian, who attempted to escape by locking himself in a bathroom. However, she allegedly grabbed a steak knife and used the blade to open the door latch before stabbing him twice in the back. Bocian managed to call 911, prompting Zaffarano to flee the scene by hopping over their back fence, though police apprehended her shortly afterward.

Mental Health Struggles and Social Media Presence

Zaffarano had built a following of approximately 4,500 Instagram followers by openly discussing her bipolar disorder diagnosis and mental health journey. Just hours before the alleged attack, she posted a series of posed photographs with the caption "Romanticizing my instability," highlighting her complex relationship with her condition.

In a more reflective post from January 22, Zaffarano wrote about the challenges of living with bipolar disorder, stating it had "taught me that progress doesn’t always look the way we’re told it should." She detailed her experience moving from "medication to medication" and frequently questioning whether her behaviors represented her true self or were symptoms of an episode. Bocian acknowledged her social media activity as a way to "get things off her chest" and viewed her influencing as an attempt to help others struggling with similar issues.

Criminal History and Legal Consequences

Court records obtained by the Daily Mail reveal Zaffarano faces charges of first-degree assault with a deadly weapon and is being held without bond. This incident adds to her existing legal troubles, which include a simple assault charge from April 2024 and previous charges from March 2024 for DUI, driving without a license, and leaving the scene of an accident.

Bocian explained that Zaffarano was on probation for both the DUI and a separate assault from last year, which contributed to her decision to flee when he called emergency services. Despite being briefly hospitalized, Bocian described his stab wounds as "not that deep" and insisted on pressing charges against his girlfriend.

Pattern of Violence and Relationship Dynamics

Bocian described the alleged stabbing as "just crazy" and revealed this was not the first instance of violence in their six-month relationship. He reported that approximately one month earlier, during another drinking session, Zaffarano had similarly punched and kicked him, leading him to temporarily move back in with his parents. "I thought we had figured it out," Bocian said about giving their relationship another chance before Monday's incident.

Zaffarano remains in custody following an initial hearing where she was denied bail, with her next court appearance scheduled for Tuesday. The Denver Police Department has been contacted for additional comment on the ongoing investigation.
