Autistic Teen Found in Woods After Aerial Search

A 17-year-old teenager with autism from New Jersey, who had been missing for over a day and a half, was miraculously found after pilots spotted him from the air using advanced infrared technology. Joel Medina disappeared on March 20 after running away from his home near 4th Avenue behind the Shore Mall in Egg Harbor Township, according to the Egg Harbor Township Police Department.

Intensive 36-Hour Search Operation

Officials conducted a rigorous search for 36 hours, ultimately locating Medina in the early morning hours of March 22. The breakthrough came when an FBI Critical Incident Response Group plane equipped with forward-looking infrared (FLIR) technology spotted the teen at 11:57 PM on March 21, deep in a heavily wooded nature preserve near his home.

'Joel was ultimately located through the coordinated use of aerial assets equipped with forward-looking infrared technology,' the EHTPD stated in an official release. Aerial footage captured Medina curled up next to a tree in the dense forest, highlighting the challenging terrain that complicated ground efforts.

Dangerous Conditions and Swift Rescue

The night Medina was found, temperatures plummeted to 35 degrees Fahrenheit, posing a severe risk as the teenager was only wearing shorts and a t-shirt when he went missing. Agents reached him approximately 30 minutes after the aerial sighting, securing him and undertaking a long trek back out of the preserve.

At 1:38 AM on March 22, Medina was safely reunited with his family and received a medical check from paramedics. Authorities confirmed he was okay and back home, marking a successful conclusion to the extensive operation.

Unified Multi-Agency Effort

The search involved an extraordinary collaboration across 19 different agencies, alongside numerous volunteers, demonstrating a community-wide, county-wide, state-wide, and federal response. 'This successful outcome was the result of an extraordinary, unified effort at every level,' officials emphasized. 'All involved shared one mission and one goal: to locate Joel safe, sound, and reunite him with his family.'

Shortly after the rescue, officials expressed relief and gratitude on social media, posting: 'JOEL is ok and was just reunited with FAMILY! Thank you to EVERYONE that never quit, never lost hope, and assisted with this HAPPY ENDING!'

Community Reaction and Gratitude

Online users widely praised the efforts of the officials and volunteers, with many highlighting the dedication that led to the positive outcome. One commenter wrote, 'Never ever thought I’d say this…. But wow, EHTPD, great job!' while another added, 'As well as a great job to all other agencies and civilians that searched for Joel! You guys really did your big ones with this.'

A family member of a volunteer shared, 'My oldest brother helped look for Joel and is taking him a special-made t-shirt that says hide and seek world champ on it!' Others noted the power of community support, with one stating, 'Incredible job by all! Many prayers answered! Never minimize the power of all those prayers not only for Joel and his family but for EVERY man and woman who dedicated their lives to service.'

In a gesture of appreciation, Medina's family provided lunch to the EHTPD on April 2, further cementing the bond between the community and the responders who ensured a safe return.
