62-Year-Old Man Arrested After Racist Attack on Elderly Diners in Arizona
Racist attack on elderly at Arizona centre caught on camera

Shocking surveillance footage has captured the moment a man launched a violent, racially motivated attack on a group of helpless senior citizens at a community centre in the United States.

A Violent Outburst in a Community Space

The incident occurred on Wednesday at the Escalante Multi-Generational Center in Tempe, Arizona. Derek Carl Kirven, a 62-year-old black man, initially attempted to access a members-only recreational area. According to local reports from AZ Family, he was informed in the lobby that meals were only for members. A staff member tried to sign him up, but Kirven left the premises.

He returned approximately two hours later and entered the restricted dining area, where around 20 people were eating. After being told again to leave, Kirven erupted into violence, attacking the elderly patrons around him.

Targeted Assault Leaves Multiple Injured

During the rampage, Kirven managed to punch several diners, breaking one victim's nose and another's wrist. He knocked one person to the ground, causing a head injury, and was seen on camera pushing a woman off her walker onto the floor, where she remained for much of the attack.

Surveillance footage showed Kirven, wearing distinctive red trousers, first punching a small group before running to a larger table, with an employee chasing him. He yelled at the employee before punching her in the face and moving around the table to attack more people. In a moment of attempted defence, one person picked up a chair to ward him off, later throwing the furniture at Kirven. This action reportedly angered the assailant, who picked up the chair and hurled it back at the individual.

Security personnel were able to detain Kirven until police officers arrived at the scene. In total, at least 12 elderly diners were assaulted, with at least six patrons and one employee suffering confirmed injuries.

Racist Motivation and Criminal History

While speaking to the Tempe Police, Kirven admitted to hitting around a dozen people and stated he knew most of them were defenceless. Crucially, he told officers he had targeted white people and Mexicans. According to court documents cited in reports, he claimed he was not allowed in the centre because he was black.

His racist tirade continued during police questioning, where he used racial slurs against his victims and directed insults at a Hispanic detective working the case. He also referred to a detective as 'white trash' and a 'confederate'.

Public records reveal that Kirven has a significant criminal history, with prior charges in New Mexico and previous convictions for kidnapping and assaulting police officers.

Derek Carl Kirven was arrested and now faces multiple charges, including aggravated assault, disorderly conduct, trespassing, and criminal damage. The Escalante Multi-Generational Center and Tempe Police have been contacted for further comment on the disturbing incident.
