Former Brisbane Broncos and Queensland State of Origin star Josh McGuire has been arrested and charged with serious domestic violence offences, including an alleged assault on a child.

Josh McGuire, aged 35, was taken into custody by police in Brisbane on Tuesday, 2 December. A spokesperson for Queensland Police confirmed the charges in a statement, revealing the ex-rugby league professional faces one count each of choking or strangulation in a domestic setting, and common assault against a child, both classified as domestic violence offences.
The investigation was conducted by the specialist Gateway Child Protection and Investigation Unit. McGuire is scheduled to make his first appearance at the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Tuesday, 17 December.
A Storied NRL Career Now Under Shadow
McGuire enjoyed a long and successful career in the National Rugby League, known for his aggressive and uncompromising style on the field. He made his debut in 2009 with the Brisbane Broncos, playing 197 matches over a decade with the club.
His career later took him to the North Queensland Cowboys for 38 games across three seasons, followed by a 27-match stint with St George Illawarra between 2021 and 2022. He finished his professional playing days overseas, turning out seven times for the Warrington Wolves in the English Super League.
At representative level, McGuire was a formidable presence. He earned 14 caps for Queensland in the State of Origin arena, scoring one try, and was selected eight times for the Australian Kangaroos. He also represented Samoa on seven occasions and played twice for the Prime Minister's XIII.
