A nine-year-old boy has been dramatically rescued after being discovered locked inside his father's utility van in eastern France, where he had been imprisoned for approximately eighteen months. The shocking case emerged in the village of Hagenbach, located near the borders with Switzerland and Germany, according to statements from the local prosecutor's office.
Discovery and Immediate Aftermath
Police were alerted to the situation on Monday after a neighbour reported hearing "sounds of a child" emanating from a parked van. Upon forcing the vehicle open, officers encountered a harrowing scene: the boy was found lying in a fetal position, naked, covered by a blanket atop a mound of rubbish and close to excrement.
The child was visibly malnourished and, due to being confined in a seated position for such an extended period, had lost the ability to walk. He was immediately transported to hospital for urgent medical care. Meanwhile, his father was detained by authorities.
Father's Explanation and Investigation Details
Prosecutor Nicolas Heitz detailed that the father claimed to have placed the boy in the van in November 2024 "to protect him." This drastic action was allegedly motivated by the father's partner wanting to send the then seven-year-old to a psychiatric hospital. However, investigators found no medical records indicating the child had any psychiatric issues prior to his disappearance; in fact, he had been achieving good grades in school.
The boy himself told investigators he experienced "big difficulties" with his father's partner and believed his father "had no choice" but to lock him away. He also revealed he had not showered since 2024.
Legal Charges and Family Impact
The father now faces preliminary charges of kidnapping among other offences and remains in custody. His partner, who denied any knowledge of the boy's presence in the van, has been handed preliminary charges including failure to assist a minor in danger. She has been released under judicial supervision.
In the wake of the discovery, the boy's twelve-year-old sister and the ten-year-old daughter of his father's partner have been placed into the care of social services. The prosecutor's office is actively investigating whether other individuals were aware of the boy's prolonged detention.
Community Reaction and Ongoing Inquiry
Friends and family members interviewed by investigators stated they believed the boy was residing in a psychiatric institution. His teachers had been informed he had transferred to a different school. Residents of Hagenbach contacted by The Associated Press expressed profound shock over the case, confirming they were unaware of the boy's whereabouts but declined to discuss specific details.
The authorities have not released the names of the victim or his relatives, citing privacy and the ongoing nature of the investigation. Prosecutor Nicolas Heitz has declined to provide further comment to the media pending additional investigative work.
