Graphic details of a brutal paramilitary-style attack have rocked a Northern Irish court, as rapper Mo Chara stands accused of a horrific kneecapping. The artist, whose real name is Kane Voyle, is charged with grievous bodily harm with intent and possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life.
The 22-year-old, from Ardboe in County Tyrone, allegedly lured his victim to a remote location before a masked gang carried out the savage punishment shooting. The court was told the incident left the young man with life-altering injuries.
A Chilling 'Execution' Threat
The most harrowing evidence came from the victim himself, who bravely testified via videolink. He described being confronted by a masked individual who chillingly told him, "You're getting executed tonight," before the assailant opened fire on his legs.
The prosecution detailed how the victim was first socialising with the defendant and others in Coalisland before being driven to a secluded area near Ardboe. It was there, the court heard, that the ambush took place.
Defence Points to 'Tragic Coincidence'
Mo Chara's defence barrister argued his client's presence was a "tragic coincidence," claiming the rapper had no prior knowledge of the planned attack. The lawyer stated Voyle was "horrified" by the violence that unfolded.
However, the prosecution painted a very different picture, alleging Voyle played an active role in orchestrating the entire event, from luring the victim to being present during the shooting.
The trial, being heard at Dungannon Crown Court, continues as the jury deliberates over the conflicting accounts of this violent night in County Tyrone.
