Police appeal for witnesses

Detective Superintendent Ian McNabb of GMP described the attack as 'violent and shocking', adding: 'Our thoughts remain with his family and loved ones at this difficult time. We are working at pace to establish the full circumstances.' He stressed that the attack is believed to be isolated and poses no wider threat to the public.

Scene remains under investigation

Forensic investigators in white protective suits were seen entering the bar throughout the afternoon. The scene remains cordoned off. Local business owner David Wilson, 65, noted a rise in anti-social behaviour in the area in recent years, saying 'there is a lot of people who will not come out round here'. A nearby shop worker confirmed police had been present 'pretty much all day'.
