Matthew James-Bailey, who portrayed Ethan Williams on Hollyoaks until his character was killed off in 2024, has joined the cast of EastEnders as DC Craig Ingram. The actor's new role brings him to Walford this summer as part of a significant storyline involving the Branning family.
DC Craig Ingram's Role in Walford
DC Craig Ingram arrives to cover Jack Branning's workload after his superiors suspect he is struggling to balance his duties with caring for his wife Denise Fox, who has been diagnosed with cancer. As Craig delves into his work, he quickly becomes involved in a case linked to Albert Square.
Some scenes have already been filmed and are set to air later this year. Executive producer Ben Wadey commented: “We’re delighted to welcome Matthew to EastEnders, and he has been a fantastic addition to the cast. Craig’s presence in Walford forms part of a storyline involving the Brannings that will unfold this summer.”
James-Bailey's Transition from Hollyoaks
James-Bailey previously played Ethan Williams on Hollyoaks, a character who first appeared as a kidnapper of Darren Osborne. Ethan became a fan favourite but was killed off on his wedding day in 2024 after being pushed from a window following arguments with his new wife Sienna Blake. The exit was part of a major cast reduction by Channel 4 as the show moved to three episodes per week.
Reflecting on his departure, James-Bailey told Digital Spy: “It's really bittersweet. It's come to an end a lot sooner than I would have liked. In previous interviews, I've said that I'd happily stay at Hollyoaks forever. It wasn't my choice to leave, but that's just the way that the game works, unfortunately!” He added that he wanted to “serve the Hollyoaks fans and give them what they want” and would have preferred an open-ended exit to give fans “a glimmer of hope.”
James-Bailey's Excitement for EastEnders
On joining EastEnders, James-Bailey said: “Joining EastEnders has been a dream come true. From it being the soundtrack to my childhood, always on in the background at home, to gathering around the TV with my family every Christmas, being able to play even a small part in such an iconic piece of British television is truly surreal.” It remains unconfirmed whether his role is temporary or permanent.
