Colm Boston, a 37-year-old father from Cardiff, died on Boxing Day after sustaining multiple injuries in an alleged street attack in the Cathays area, an inquest opening has revealed. Mr Boston, of Summerfield Place, Cardiff, was taken to hospital following an incident on December 22 last year and passed away four days later.
Inquest Details and Injuries
At Pontypridd Coroner's Court on Thursday, the inquest heard that Mr Boston was found with multiple bruises and injuries possibly from an assault. A CT scan upon admission to the University Hospital of Wales revealed a traumatic head injury. He was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit for neurological care but died on Boxing Day.
A post-mortem examination by Dr Stephen Leadbeatter gave the provisional cause of death as brain swelling and subdural haemorrhage, pending further testing.
Arrests and Investigation
Four people were arrested in connection with Mr Boston's death and have been bailed pending further investigations. South Wales Police were called to a report of an assault in Pentyrch Street at around 6.15pm on December 22. A force spokesman appealed for CCTV and dash-cam footage from Maindy Road, Pentyrch Street, Whitchurch Road, and Cathays Terrace between 4pm and 6.30pm on that day.
Family's Tribute
Following his death, Mr Boston's family paid tribute, saying: "Colm was a father, a son, a brother, a cousin, and a deeply loved friend to many across Cardiff and beyond. Colm lived a complex life, with its highs and lows, but he loved the people in his life fiercely and mattered greatly to so many. His loss has left a profound impact on all who knew him."
The family expressed gratitude to the nurses and doctors at University Hospital of Wales, describing them as "absolutely amazing in their care, professionalism, and unwavering support." They also thanked the Family Liaison Officer and the public for their compassion.
