The train driver who died in a crash near Bedford on Friday passed a red signal moments before the collision, the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) has confirmed.
Fatal Collision on London-Bound Service
Driver Shaun Burton, 60, died and approximately 100 people were injured when one London-bound service crashed into the back of another on Friday. The incident occurred near Bedford, prompting a full investigation by the RAIB.
According to the RAIB, initial findings indicate that Burton's train passed a red signal before the collision. The exact circumstances leading to the signal being passed are still under investigation.
Investigation Underway
The RAIB has deployed a team of investigators to the scene to gather evidence, including data from train recorders and signal logs. They are also conducting interviews with railway staff and witnesses.
A spokesperson for the RAIB said: "Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the driver who died, and with all those affected by this serious incident. We are working diligently to establish the full sequence of events."
Impact and Response
The crash caused significant disruption to rail services in the region, with lines closed for several hours. Emergency services, including ambulances and fire crews, attended the scene to treat the injured. Many passengers were taken to local hospitals with injuries ranging from minor to serious.
Network Rail has launched its own investigation and is cooperating fully with the RAIB. A spokesperson said: "Safety is our top priority, and we are committed to understanding what happened to prevent such an incident from occurring again."
This is a developing story, and further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
