Train services between Bolton and Preston are disrupted this morning (Tuesday, October 20) due to a failure of the electricity supply, with lines blocked and services cancelled, delayed or revised.
Power Failure Blocks Key Route
National Rail reported that a failure of the electricity supply in the Preston area has disrupted some lines. As a result, trains between Preston and Bolton may be cancelled, revised, delayed by up to 45 minutes or diverted. Disruption is expected to last until at least 12pm.
Operators and Routes Affected
Northern said all lines are blocked between Preston and Bolton, affecting routes between Millom/Barrow-in-Furness/Windermere/Blackpool North and Manchester Airport. TransPennine Express also reported that routes between Manchester Airport and Glasgow Central, and Manchester Airport and Edinburgh, may be delayed or diverted.
Network Rail Response
Network Rail, which runs Manchester Piccadilly station, said in a post on X: "Sorry to passengers impacted by the damage to the overhead power lines near Preston. We are working hard to get all lines open again. Please keep updated via train operators and @nationalrailenq before you start your journey."
Passengers are advised to check with train operators before travelling, as disruption is expected to continue until midday.
