Southampton has been named the best city in England for cycling, according to a study of 2,000 keen cyclists. The city's good cycle lanes, clear road signage, and ample parking were highlighted as key reasons for its top ranking. Newcastle and Cambridge also featured prominently in the list.
Top Cities for Cycling
The top 10 cities for cycling, as judged by UK cyclists, are:
- Southampton
- Newcastle
- Cambridge
- Brighton and Hove
- London
- Manchester
- Bristol
- Birmingham
- Sheffield
- Glasgow
Newcastle was named the UK's cycling commuter capital, with 91% of respondents using bikes or e-bikes as their main way to get to work. Birmingham topped the list for e-bike commuting, with four in 10 commuting on an e-bike some of the time.
Challenges for Cyclists
Despite the positive rankings, 30% of cyclists complained about impatient drivers. Potholes remain a major issue, with 65% of cyclists saying they affect their cycling experience. Residents in Leeds and Leicester notice potholes more than anywhere else, while 53% of Mancunians have experienced bike damage or injury due to potholes.
Distance is the biggest barrier to cycling to work for 56% of cyclists, while 29% worry about arriving sweaty. Over a third (36%) would cycle to work if their employer provided a shower, and 30% cited a lack of secure bike storage.
Growing Interest in Cycling
The research, commissioned by Halfords, found that 57% of cyclists have considered cycling more due to rising fuel prices, and 74% cycle more to keep fit. Pippa Wibberley, director of cycling for Halfords, said: "Cycling is great for the environment and your legs. But some cities are better suited to bikes than others. Good cycle lanes and courteous drivers are key."
She added: "There is a growing appetite for cycling across the UK. But employers and councils need to step up by providing showers and tackling potholes to encourage more people to cycle."
