Emergency Services Rush to Scene After Bus Incident
Three teenage boys were taken to hospital with serious injuries after falling from the top deck of a double-decker bus in Wigan yesterday afternoon. The incident occurred on Bolton Road in Ashton-in-Makerfield shortly before 4pm on Wednesday, 7th January 2026.
Emergency services, including an air ambulance, were dispatched to the scene. The boys, two aged 13 and one aged 14, are all pupils at St Edmund Arrowsmith Catholic High School. While they sustained potentially serious injuries, their conditions are not believed to be life-threatening.
Police Investigation Points to Emergency Stop
Greater Manchester Police have confirmed they are investigating the circumstances. A spokesperson stated that the incident happened after the bus made an emergency stop. "We believe the three children fell after leaning on an emergency exit window," the GMP spokesperson said.
Photographs from the scene show the side window on the upper deck completely missing, with shattered glass covering the pavement below. The bus involved was the 950 service, operated by Bolton-based Vision Bus.
School and Authorities Respond to the Accident
In a letter sent to parents, the headteacher of St Edmund Arrowsmith Catholic High School, Mark Dumican, addressed the incident. He confirmed the school was in contact with the families affected and was offering support to pupils who witnessed the event.
Mr Dumican wrote: "Contrary to some reports, there are no life-threatening injuries, and all three boys have been assessed in hospital." He also urged parents to reinforce the school's safety message that pupils must remain seated for the duration of their bus journey, especially on the top deck.
Greater Manchester Mayor, Andy Burnham, commented that the fall appeared linked to "some disturbance on the upper deck" and confirmed the service was not part of the Bee Network. A spokesperson for Vision Bus said the company is "completing an investigation and helping the police with their inquiries." Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) is also supporting the ongoing probe.
