A Tesco supermarket in Greenfield has been forced to close after a major fire broke out at a nearby industrial site, prompting the evacuation of 45 homes as a precaution.
Fire crews called to industrial blaze
Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said it was called to the scene on Chew Valley Road in Greenfield at around 7:45am on Sunday 16 August. The fire is at an industrial premises near the Tesco store in the village.
Ten fire engines and a number of specialist appliances from across Greater Manchester are in attendance, with firefighters working to bring the fire under control.
Tesco temporarily closed
The Tesco store in Greenfield has been temporarily closed due to the fire, with its car park now being used by fire crews battling the blaze. A spokesperson for Tesco said: “Our Greenfield Superstore is temporarily closed due to a fire nearby. We apologise for the inconvenience.”
Residents advised to stay indoors
Due to the amount of smoke, nearby residents are advised to keep their windows and doors closed. A cordon is in place and people are advised to avoid the area if possible.
According to the Manchester Evening News, 45 homes have been evacuated as a precaution on the neighbouring streets, Knoll Close and Wellington Road. This is a breaking news story and is being constantly updated.
