A bus has crashed into a crowded bus stop in the Östermalm district of central Stockholm, resulting in multiple fatalities and injuries. The incident occurred at approximately 3:24 pm local time, prompting a massive emergency service response with dozens of police vehicles and ambulances rushing to the scene.

Eyewitnesses Describe Scene of Panic

Local residents reported hearing a loud bang followed by sudden screams. One witness told Aftonbladet, "I was lying in bed in my room when I heard a loud bang and several people screaming. I then ran over to the window and saw a bus had crashed and several people on the ground."

Another witness, Michelle Mac Key, described getting off another bus just as the crash happened. "I walked across the road and saw the double-decker bus that rammed into a bus stop. I witnessed total chaos," she said, adding that the experience left her feeling shaken and that she would "have nightmares."

Emergency Response and Investigation Underway

Police confirmed that several people were killed and injured in the incident. Michelle Marcher for the Stockholm region stated, "At the moment we have five injured, two of whom are seriously wounded, that have been transported to the hospital."

Officials confirmed that the bus was not in service and that no passengers were on board at the time of the crash. The bus driver has been arrested on suspicion of aggravated manslaughter. Police press officer Nadya Norton confirmed the arrest but stated that police are not currently commenting on the number, gender, or ages of the victims. She also confirmed that the incident is not being investigated as a terror attack.
