Stansted Airport Expansion Approved: Set to Become UK's Second Busiest Hub
Stansted expansion green-lit, set to be UK's 2nd busiest airport

London Stansted Airport is poised for a dramatic transformation, with its ambitious expansion plans receiving the crucial green light from local authorities. This pivotal decision sets the stage for the Essex-based hub to potentially leapfrog its rivals and become the second busiest airport in the United Kingdom, fundamentally altering the nation's aviation landscape.

Planning Approval Unlocks Major Growth

Uttlesford District Council has formally approved Stansted's application to significantly increase its annual passenger capacity. The approval, which is subject to a final sign-off, grants permission for the airport to grow from handling 30 million passengers in the year to September 2024 to a new ceiling of 51 million travellers each year. This growth is expected to unfold gradually over the coming two decades.

Remarkably, this substantial increase in passenger numbers will be achieved without the need for major new construction or an increase in flight movements. The strategy centres on making more efficient use of the airport's existing single runway and adapting facilities to accommodate larger aircraft, all within the current airport boundary. This approach is designed to minimise environmental and community impact while maximising capacity.

Reshaping the UK's Airport Hierarchy

The approval has major implications for the ranking of the UK's busiest airports. Currently, Stansted holds the position of the nation's fourth busiest airport. If it reaches its new 51 million passenger capacity, it would surpass Gatwick Airport, which handles around 42 million passengers annually, and claim the number two spot.

Heathrow Airport would retain its top position, having welcomed 83.9 million passengers in 2024. This shift would cement Stansted's role as a critical piece of national infrastructure and a major gateway to London and the East of England, providing significant alternative capacity to the heavily congested airports in the capital's west.

Economic Boost and Sustainable Promises

The expansion is projected to deliver a substantial economic windfall for the region. A statement from the airport confirmed the plans would unlock 4,500 new jobs, supported by its existing training and education facilities aimed at nurturing the next generation of aviation professionals.

Alongside job creation, the approved plans commit to major infrastructure and sustainability measures. These include:

  • Improvements to M11 Junction 8 to reduce road congestion.
  • Funding for enhanced local bus services and roads.
  • Measures to tackle the issue of 'fly-parking'.
  • A goal for half of all passengers to access the airport using public transport.
  • A commitment to decarbonising airport operations as it grows.

Gareth Powell, London Stansted's Managing Director, welcomed the decision, stating the approval "lays the foundations for the long-term sustainable growth of London Stansted." He emphasised that the expansion would deliver "widespread social and economic benefits" without increasing the permitted number of flights, allowing the airport to attract new routes and create thousands of jobs while growing sustainably over the next 20 years.
