Ryanair has introduced a new policy that could leave some holidaymakers facing an extra £55 bill at the airport. The budget carrier, known for its stripped-back service, frequently adds charges for luggage and seat selection.
Current Hand Luggage Rules
Currently, passengers on standard tickets are allowed one small personal item as hand luggage without extra payment. If the item exceeds the allowed size, it must be checked into the hold, incurring an additional fee.
Online Check-In Requirement
While many travelers are aware of the luggage rules, another Ryanair requirement could hit your wallet hard. Everyone flying with Ryanair must check in online. Travelers can then store their boarding pass on a smartphone or tablet.
In November 2025, Ryanair moved to 100% digital boarding passes via its app, eliminating paper passes to reduce costs, improve service, streamline rebooking, and save 300 tonnes of paper annually.
Check-In Windows
Online check-in becomes available 60 days before departure for those who have paid for allocated seats, or 24 hours beforehand for passengers happy with a randomly assigned seat. Whatever your seating choice, the online check-in window closes two hours before the flight departs.
After completing online check-in, boarding passes are generated, and passengers must save a digital version. Anyone who does not check in online will be charged £55 (or equivalent in euros) at the airport.
How to Avoid the Fee
To sidestep this charge, ensure you have a valid boarding pass before heading to the airport. For those traveling without a smartphone or tablet, Ryanair will issue a complimentary boarding pass, provided online check-in has been completed before arrival.
Ryanair confirmed it will send travelers a reminder to check in online shortly before their scheduled departure.
