RFU Proposes More Concerts at Twickenham’s Allianz Stadium to Fund Redevelopment
RFU Plans More Concerts at Twickenham Stadium

The Rugby Football Union (RFU) has unveiled new proposals to increase the number of concerts at Twickenham's Allianz Stadium, as part of a broader strategy to redevelop the home of English rugby. The stadium revamp, estimated to cost over £600 million, hinges on expanding non-rugby event days at the southwest London venue.

Current Restrictions and Proposed Changes

Under existing agreements with Richmond Borough Council, the RFU is limited to just three non-sporting event days per year, with no consecutive events and a capacity cap of 55,000. The new plan seeks to gradually increase this to 15 events annually, still significantly fewer than Wembley Stadium (54) and Tottenham Hotspur Stadium (30).

The proposal follows 18 months of consultations with local stakeholders. The RFU claims agreement has been reached to enhance rail capacity at Twickenham Station. A new facility fee on concert tickets would fund a Community Enhancement Fund to support local residents.

Financial Context

Approximately 85% of the RFU's revenue comes from Allianz Stadium, primarily from major men's matchdays. Bill Sweeney, RFU Chief Executive, emphasised the stadium's importance: "The UK has one of the strongest live events industries, and Allianz Stadium – the second largest stadium in the country – is best placed to capitalise." He added that more concerts would generate tens of millions of pounds annually for local and national economies, create hundreds of jobs, and support local schools, charities, and businesses.

The expanded licence is also critical for the RFU's £500 million investment plan for rugby over the next five years. A planning application will be submitted in due course.

Background

The RFU had previously explored relocating to sites in Milton Keynes or Birmingham, but its primary goal remains staying at the ground it has occupied for over 115 years. In 2024, Allianz secured a 10-year naming rights sponsorship deal.
