The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) has issued guidance that could help drivers secure discounts on car insurance. The advice, published on the GOV.UK website, directs motorists to the 'Driving licences' section, where information about the Pass Plus training course is highlighted. While primarily aimed at new drivers, the course can benefit anyone looking to enhance their driving skills and potentially reduce insurance premiums.
What Is Pass Plus?
Pass Plus is a practical training course lasting at least six hours, designed to improve driving skills and promote safer driving. It is particularly useful for new drivers within the first year of passing their test, but can be taken at any time. The course covers six modules: driving in town, in all weathers, on rural roads, at night, on dual carriageways, and on motorways. All modules are practical, though local conditions may necessitate some theory-based sessions. Participants are assessed throughout and must reach the required standard in each module to pass. No formal test is taken.
Successful completion may lead to a car insurance discount, although not all insurers offer this. The DVLA advises checking with insurance providers, especially if the practical driving test was passed more than a year ago. Discounts can sometimes be put on hold for up to two years if the driver does not currently own a car.
Local Council Discounts
Some local councils offer discounts on Pass Plus training costs. Eligibility is restricted to residents of the council's area. Discounts are available in parts of Scotland, Wales, and regions including the North-west, South-east, and South-west of England. However, not all councils participate. For example, only four councils in Scotland offer the discount. In contrast, all local councils in Wales provide discounted Pass Plus courses through the Pass Plus Cymru scheme.
How to Obtain a Discount
To qualify for a car insurance discount, drivers must obtain a Pass Plus certificate. Upon completing the course, the instructor provides a training report form, which must be signed by both the instructor and the driver. The driver then applies for the certificate. The amount of discount varies by insurance company, and drivers should confirm eligibility directly with their insurer.
