A number of road closures and roadworks are in place across the North East this week that drivers should be aware of. Some roads are fully closed while others have lane closures or temporary traffic lights in operation.
Newcastle
On the A167 Tyne Bridge, a lane is closed in both directions with a 30 mph speed restriction and narrow lanes due to roadworks from the A167(M) to Church Street in Gateshead. Delays are expected, with the work scheduled to continue until 0:59 on 16th June 2028.
Worswick Street One Way Street is closed due to roadworks from Pilgrim Street to Carliol Square until 0:59 on 10th April 2027. Temporary traffic lights are in place due to gas main work on B1307 Sandyford Road in both directions at Starbeck Avenue until 0:00 on 19th October.
Whitehouse Road is closed in both directions due to roadworks between Armstrong Road and Walwick Fell until 0:59 on 18th July 2027. Temporary traffic lights are in operation on William Armstrong Drive in both directions at A695 Scotswood Road until 16:00 on 26th March 2027.
Traffic is taking turns due to electricity work on Rothbury Terrace in both directions at Heaton Road until 0:00 on 15th October. Pottery Lane is closed in both directions due to roadworks from B1600 Forth Banks to Shot Factory Lane until 17:00 on 31st March 2027.
Further temporary traffic lights are in place due to gas main work on Myrtle Crescent at Glebe Road until 30th October, and on Claremont Road at Claremont Street until 16:00 on 8th November. Gas main work on Broadmead Way at B1311 Whickham View is causing temporary traffic lights until 17th December.
Temporary traffic lights are also in operation due to gas main work on B1505 Great Lime Road at Glebe Road until 30th October, and due to roadworks on B1311 Gallowgate from B1307 Percy Street to St Andrews Street until 27th February 2027.
Roadworks on B1311 Adelaide Terrace at Bond Street are causing temporary traffic lights until 16:00 on 7th May 2027, with delays expected. Temporary traffic lights are also in place on City West Business Park at A695 Scotswood Road until 16:00 on 26th March 2027.
Gateshead
Durant Road is closed in both directions due to roadworks from John Dobson Street to College Street from 7:00 on 27th September to 19:00 on 27th October. Temporary traffic lights are in place due to water main work on Eskdale between Scafell and Coniston until 30th October.
Roadworks on A167 Newcastle Bank at Windsor Road are causing temporary traffic lights until 0:00 on 23rd October. Banesley Lane is closed in both directions due to telecoms work from Ouslaw Lane to Coach Road until 0:59 on 16th October.
John Dobson Street is closed in both directions due to roadworks from Northumberland Road to Lisle Street from 7:00 on 27th September to 19:00 on 27th October. The A695 eastbound exit slip road at Chain Bridge Road has a blocked lane due to electricity work until 13th November.
Temporary traffic lights are in place due to roadworks on B6317 Whickham Highway in both directions between Dunston Bank and Knightside Gardens until 17:00 on 4th November.
North Tyneside
Temporary traffic lights are in operation due to gas main work on Monkseaton Front Street at Cauldwell Lane until 28th October, with delays expected. Wilton Drive is closed in both directions due to water main work from Sandringham Drive to Haddon Green until 0:00 on 16th October, with a diversion for the W1 bus.
Traffic is taking turns due to electricity work on Elton Street East at Equitable Street until 0:00 on 15th October. Roadworks on B1317 Killingworth Lane near Simonside Way are causing temporary traffic lights until 22nd September 2027.

Emergency repairs and gas main work on A1056 Sandy Lane in both directions between the B1505 and the A189 are causing temporary traffic lights and delays until 0:00 on 21st October. A186 Station Road is closed in both directions due to water main work from Vine Street to the A193 until 0:00 on 14th October.
One lane is closed on A192 Preston North Road northbound from A1058 Beach Road to Hartburn Road due to junction improvements, including upgrading the footpath and crossings, until 15:30 on 10th November 2026.
South Tyneside
Temporary traffic lights are in place in Boldon Colliery due to roadworks on B1298 Abingdon Way in both directions between Witney Way and A184 Newcastle Road until 17:00 on 18th December. Roadworks on Didcot Way at B1298 Abingdon Way are also causing temporary traffic lights until 17:00 on 18th December.
Gas main work on Front Street at Nursery Lane is causing temporary traffic lights until 16th October.
Northumberland
Temporary traffic lights are in operation due to roadworks on Coopie's Lane in both directions between Coopies Way and Coopies Field until 18:00 on 12th October. Traffic is taking turns due to electricity work on Chatham Close at Stamford Avenue until 0:00 on 16th October, and on Amble Close at Druridge Drive until 0:00 on 15th October.
Emergency repairs and telecoms work on B6320 Hexham Road in both directions between the B6318 and Main Street are causing temporary traffic lights until 0:59 on 14th October. Station Road is closed in both directions due to emergency repairs and roadworks between Stanegate and North Bank until 0:00 on 31st March 2027.
