Newcastle and Gateshead match not disrupted by flyover closure
Newcastle-Gateshead match safe from flyover closure chaos

Gateshead Council has confirmed that the impending closure of the Park Lane roundabout for the demolition of the A167 flyover will not clash with Newcastle United's pre-season friendly against Gateshead FC on Saturday, July 25. The match, scheduled for a 12:30pm kick-off at Gateshead International Stadium, will conclude hours before the road restrictions take effect at 8pm that evening.

Closure timing confirmed

The Park Lane roundabout closure, part of the A167 flyover demolition project, is expected to cause significant traffic disruption. The junction connects the Felling Bypass to the Tyne Bridge, and drivers have been urged to avoid the area during the closure period from July 25 to August 21. However, the council clarified that the closure has always been planned to start at 8pm on July 25, ensuring no conflict with the football match.

Gateshead Council stated: "The Gateshead FC friendly against Newcastle United on Saturday 25th July will not be affected by the closure of Park Lane roundabout. The match is scheduled for a 12.30pm kick off, and the closure of Park Lane will not be in place until 8pm that evening – this has always been the plan from our contractors BAM. We clarified this with the club on Monday, so they could prepare for the big match without worrying about roads and fans travelling. We would still encourage as many fans as possible to get the Metro, bus, walk or cycle to the game, as parking is limited."

MP welcomes resolution

Local MP Mark Ferguson had previously raised concerns about the potential clash, emphasising the match's importance for Gateshead FC's finances and local footfall. He said: "I’m glad this has been resolved sensibly. The flyover work can still go ahead, but without unnecessary disruption for Newcastle and Gateshead fans." The match marks the first meeting between the two Tyneside clubs since summer 2023, when over 7,000 spectators attended the fixture.

Diversion and travel advice

A diversion route via Quays Boulevard and Hawks Road will be in place during the closure, but officials warn it is not designed to handle the usual traffic volume. Fans are advised to use public transport, cycling, or walking to avoid congestion. The flyover demolition is part of a larger infrastructure project in Gateshead.
