A footbridge in Newcastle city centre could remain closed for up to five years because of construction works at MEA House, according to Newcastle City Council. The walkway over Durant Road has been shut off to prevent unauthorised access to the building site and ensure public safety.
Closure Due to University Development
Northumbria University is redeveloping MEA House, which it purchased in 2023, forcing charities previously based there to relocate. The stairway leading to the bridge on its northern side, next to the Ellison Place car park, now falls within the construction zone, making it inaccessible.
A closure order issued by the council states the restrictions could last up to five years but “could be shortened or extended” depending on progress. A council spokesperson said: “Access to the footbridge over Durant Road is currently unavailable due to development works taking place at Mea House. The stairs leading to the bridge are now located within the construction site. In order to prevent unauthorised access to the construction site, and to ensure public safety, we are therefore temporarily closing the footbridge at both ends for the duration of the works. During this time pedestrians will need to use alternative routes and nearby pedestrian crossings.”
Impact on Pedestrians and Nearby Developments
The footbridge connects to a wider network of walkways linking to Hadrian House and the New Bridge Street hotel, both of which are also subject to major regeneration plans. Plans were unveiled earlier this year for a £60 million student accommodation development on the site of Hadrian House. Sona Estates and Argon aim to demolish the office block and its surrounding walkways, described as a “dilapidated” and “unsafe” remnant of Newcastle’s T Dan Smith era, to make way for a 21-storey housing complex. Meanwhile, Gainford Group has proposed a 29-storey residential tower and a new hotel at the New Bridge Street Hotel site.
Pedestrians are advised to use alternative routes and nearby pedestrian crossings during the closure.
