Merseytravel has confirmed that people aged 60 and over living in Merseyside are eligible for a free Over 60s Travel Pass, which provides free travel on local buses, Merseyrail trains, and Mersey Ferries across the region.
The pass allows free travel on local buses within the Merseyside area, Merseyrail trains (City, Wirral and Northern lines) within Merseyside, and as far as Chester, Ellesmere Port and Ormskirk. It also covers direct river crossings on Mersey Ferries, but not River Explorer or Special Cruises. The pass cannot be used on coach trips, National Express services, or train routes outside the Merseyrail network.
How to Apply and Associated Costs
Applications can be made at any Merseytravel Centre. Passes are printed only at Queen Square Bus Station, Birkenhead Bus Station, and Bootle Bus Station. A £10 fee applies for the first Over 60s Travel Pass.
The £10 fee is waived for individuals receiving Universal Credit, Employment Support Allowance (ESA), Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA), Working Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit, or Income Support.
Eligibility Outside Merseyside
For those living outside Merseyside, eligibility for a free older person's bus pass is linked to the State Pension age, which is currently 66.
