Heworth Leisure Centre in Gateshead has opened a new Aqua Play area for children under 8, following a £200,000 investment. The facility, part of a £13 million upgrade across four Gateshead leisure centres, is now available for families to book.
Opening announcement and features
In a social media announcement, Heworth Leisure Centre said: "Firstly, thank you all for your patience whilst we've been building Aqua Play." The centre added: "We are now happy to announce at Heworth Leisure Centre Aqua Play is now open! It’s a fun-filled space for children under 8 to splash, explore and learn through water play."
The area includes various interactive water features and a small slide. The £200,000 allocated for Aqua Play also covered the removal of a FlowRider surf simulator.
Guidance for parents and groups
The centre advised that a supervising adult must stay with their child and actively supervise them throughout the visit. It also assured parents that "grown-ups don’t need to wear swimming costumes, short-sleeved clothing is fine, so you can join in comfortably."
The official description said: "Aqua Play gives younger children the chance to explore water through play. As they splash, pour and watch water move through the features, they can develop their curiosity and practise skills such as coordination, communication and problem-solving. Playing alongside other children can also encourage sharing, taking turns and building confidence in a new environment."
The centre is offering the area for schools and youth groups, stating: "Aqua Play may also offer a different setting for schools and groups looking to include water-based play in their activities." Schools can contact the centre to discuss requirements.
Heworth Leisure Centre added: "We recognise that children have different sensory needs and may respond to water, sound, movement and busy environments in different ways. If you would like to talk through your child’s needs or ask about a visit, please contact the centre before booking." For session times and prices, families are directed to the Better UK app or the reception team.
