Merseyrail and Northern Update Services for Hottest Day in Merseyside
Merseyrail and Northern Update for Hottest Day

Merseyside is bracing for temperatures between 32 and 35 degrees Celsius on Thursday, with high humidity making it feel even hotter. An amber warning for extreme heat is in place across the North West. In response, transport operators have made changes to their timetables, urging passengers to check before travelling.

Northern Reduces Services Due to Heat

Northern Trains has reduced the number of trains running on various routes until Friday. A spokesperson told the ECHO: "Due to the extreme heat, we have had to reduce the number of trains running on various routes until Friday, and those that are running will be much busier than usual." Passengers are strongly advised to check their full journey before setting off and be prepared for longer waiting times and cancellations. Customers with tickets for Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday can travel at a different time at no extra cost.

Merseyrail Maintains Near-Normal Timetable

Merseyrail plans to run a relatively normal timetable but warns customers to check the latest travel information on its website. Network Rail has imposed an emergency speed restriction on the Headbolt Lane line, meaning services run every 30 minutes until the end of service on Friday. Merseyrail has been working with Network Rail to prepare the network for extreme heat, but high temperatures can increase disruption risk, so passengers should allow extra time.

Advice for Travelers

Some operators in other parts of the country are running temporary timetables, especially in areas under red weather warnings. Those travelling from Merseyside to other regions are urged to check timetables and only travel if necessary.
