A major police incident has forced the complete closure of the M5 motorway in Gloucestershire, causing significant disruption for drivers during Tuesday's travel. Both carriageways are shut between junction 13 for Stroud and junction 14 for Dursley and Falfield.
Emergency Services Respond to Serious Collision
The closure was enacted after Gloucestershire Police were called to a collision on the motorway at 11:45 on Tuesday, 13 January 2026. National Highways confirmed the shutdown is due to a "police-led incident." All emergency services are currently at the scene, with traffic officers working to manage the situation.
Plans are actively being made to clear vehicles that are trapped within the closure zone. At present, authorities have not provided an estimated time for when the vital motorway link will reopen, warning motorists to expect lengthy delays.
Official Diversion Route for Stranded Motorists
National Highways has issued a formal diversion for northbound traffic. Drivers are instructed to follow the solid triangle diversion symbol on roadside signs.
The route is as follows:
- Exit the M5 northbound at junction 14.
- Turn left onto the B4509.
- At the junction with the A38, turn right and join the A38 northbound.
- Continue on the A38 northbound through the villages of Cambridge and Claypits.
- Re-join the M5 northbound at junction 13.
Similar advice is expected for southbound traffic, with drivers urged to allow extra time for their journeys and to check live traffic updates before setting out.
Widespread Travel Chaos Expected
The closure of such a critical artery in the UK's motorway network is causing severe travel chaos. The M5 is a key route connecting the South West and Midlands, and the incident is expected to cause knock-on congestion on surrounding A-roads, including the A38 diversion route.
National Highways is advising road users to avoid the area entirely if possible. A spokesperson stated: "Traffic Officers are on scene and working with all emergency services with plans being made to clear the traffic caught within the closure."
Commuters and hauliers are facing major delays, with the situation likely to impact travel for several hours. Drivers are reminded not to use emergency lanes for progress and to follow official diversion signs.
