Liverpool Central Station Revamp Promises 'World Class Welcome'
Liverpool Central Station Revamp Promises World Class Welcome

Liverpool has the potential to deliver a “world class welcome” through the major redevelopment of its Central station, according to Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram. Earlier this summer, striking new images were revealed of how the revamped transport hub could look, showcasing a radical transformation of the area’s profile in the city centre.

Ambitious Plans for a Key Gateway

The proposed redevelopment, led by the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority, aims to create a well-connected, high-quality gateway to the city centre. The project will tackle capacity issues at the busiest underground station outside London while unlocking wider regeneration, including new homes, jobs, public spaces, and investment opportunities.

Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram emphasized the significance of the project: “Not only is Liverpool Central the busiest underground station outside London, but a massive regeneration project that is key to our city’s future success. It’s important that we get the train station element right, but this is also a unique opportunity to deliver new homes, enhanced space for growing businesses and deliver a world-class welcome befitting a world-class city like ours.”

Phased Funding and Public Consultation

The Liverpool Central project is being developed through a phased funding approach, combining public investment with the potential to unlock significant private sector backing. At its heart, this is a growth project for the city and the region, with Central at the hub of the local rail network.

Liverpool Council is inviting residents, businesses, and stakeholders to have their say on the future of the Central Station area through a new online engagement platform. The platform brings together information on the emerging Spatial Regeneration Framework (SRF), setting out a vision for how Central Station and its surrounding neighbourhood could evolve as a key gateway into the city centre.

Cllr Nick Small, Liverpool Council cabinet member for growth and economy, said: “We want to make it as easy as possible for people to understand the proposals for the Central Station area and have their say on its future. This new platform brings together information on the emerging plans in a way that is clear and accessible, so I’d encourage everyone with an interest in the area to take a look and share their views. The feedback we receive will play an important role in helping to shape the next stages of the project.”

How to Get Involved

The engagement is currently scheduled to close on July 19. People can explore the plans and take part in the survey by visiting the dedicated online platform. The consultation aims to ensure that local voices shape the transformation of this important part of Liverpool in the years ahead.
