UK Airport Drop-Off Fees Soar in 2026: Four Major Hubs Hike Prices
Four major UK airports raise drop-off charges in 2026

Air travellers across the United Kingdom are facing a fresh financial sting before they even reach the terminal, as four major airports have already increased their passenger drop-off charges at the start of 2026.

Which Airports Have Increased Their Fees?

The new year has brought significant price hikes for drivers dropping off friends and family. Gatwick Airport now holds the dubious title of the most expensive, raising its minimum charge from £7 to £10 for a 10-minute stay. This follows an increase to just £7 in May of last year.

In a major policy shift, London City Airport has ended its status as the last major London hub without a drop-off fee. From January 6, drivers must pay £8 for stays of up to five minutes, with an additional £1 charged for every extra minute, capped at a maximum 10-minute period.

This follows Heathrow Airport's increase from £6 to £7, which came into effect on New Year's Day alongside a new strict 10-minute time limit in its drop-off zones. Meanwhile, Bristol Airport has also raised its charges, with the fee for up to 10 minutes climbing from £7 to £8.50.

Why Are Prices Rising and What Are the Alternatives?

The airports cite rising operational costs as the primary driver. Gatwick pointed to business rates that have more than doubled, while London City stated the new fee will help "maintain efficient access to the forecourt".

Travel experts have criticised the moves. Guy Hobbs, a Travel Expert at Which?, called the hikes "harsh" and "oppressive", adding another layer of "stress, frustration and cost to passengers". Emily Barnett, Travel Expert at Compare the Market, warned that for families trying to save money, these fees represent an unexpected extra expense.

Fortunately, there are ways to avoid these escalating costs. All major UK airports offer free drop-off options in long-stay car parks connected by shuttle buses. Using public transport where feasible, or considering airport-approved Park and Ride services, can also prove more cost-effective.

Planning Ahead to Mitigate the Cost

This wave of price increases serves as a broader reminder for holidaymakers to seek savings elsewhere. Booking travel insurance early and comparing deals can lock in better prices. Assessing all transport options to the airport before a trip can make a substantial difference to the overall budget.

It is worth noting that Blue Badge holders are exempt from the new charge at London City and receive extended parking time at Bristol. Black cabs are also exempt at London City. Heathrow and Gatwick have both stated they have no further rises planned for this year.
