Edinburgh is facing a second day of disruption after a fire gutted a historic building on Princes Street, causing significant damage to the former Debenhams department store. The blaze broke out in the early hours of Thursday, destroying the roof and top floors of the disused B-listed structure, leaving the interior blackened and charred.
Road Closures and Transport Disruptions
Castle Street, Frederick Street, and Rose Street North Lane were reopened at approximately 8:30pm on Thursday, but Princes Street remains closed, along with Rose Street and Rose Street South Lane. This has led to ongoing disruptions for tram and bus services into Friday.
Lothian Buses reported that 35 services have been affected. A service update stated: "Due to a building fire, part of Princes Street has been closed with immediate effect. These diversions will be in place from 7:00pm July 9 until further notice." Edinburgh Trams are running a partial route from Edinburgh Airport to the West End only.
Safety Concerns and Investigation
Police Scotland confirmed on Thursday night that firefighters and officers could not enter the building due to safety concerns. Work is ongoing to make the area safe, and inquiries are at an early stage. A joint investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire.
Members of the public are advised to continue avoiding the area and to keep windows and doors closed where possible. Ticket acceptance is in place with ScotRail between Edinburgh Gateway and Edinburgh Waverley (St Andrew Square) and on Lothian Buses between the West End and Newhaven.
