Thousands of British tourists flying to Italy with EasyJet next week face a 24-hour disruption due to a strike called by the USB union for July 21. The industrial action involves EasyJet workers in Italy and staff at several ground-handling companies, potentially causing flight cancellations, delays, and rescheduling throughout the day.
Peak Summer Travel Impact
The strike coincides with one of the busiest periods of the summer travel season, when many UK holidaymakers head to popular Italian destinations including Milan, Rome, Naples, Venice, Pisa, Olbia, Catania, and Palermo. Even limited disruptions could have widespread effects, as airlines often use the same aircraft and crew for multiple flights daily, increasing the risk of delays spreading across the network.
Strike Details and Affected Services
Naples Airport confirmed the strike on its website, advising passengers: "We inform passengers that, due to the national strike, there may be delays or cancellations. For information on your flight, we invite you to contact the airline, tour operator or travel agency." This follows a previous strike by EasyJet workers in Italy on July 5.
Additional walkouts by workers at airline Uab Dat Lt and ground-handling firms GH, Sky Service, and Borelli Health Service at Naples and Salerno airports will occur between 10am and 2pm. GH employees at Lamezia Terme airport are striking for the full 24 hours, while Sogeaal workers in Alghero will strike from 1pm to 5pm.
Guaranteed Service Windows
Despite the widespread disruption, guaranteed service will be provided between 7am and 10am and 6pm and 9pm. Passengers are urged to check with their airline for specific flight status updates.
