A major route connecting Cardiff city centre with Cardiff Bay will be closed to traffic for more than five weeks from late July, Cardiff Council has announced. The closure of Bute Street between Maria Street and North Church Street will begin at 7.30pm on Friday, July 24, and is scheduled to last until September 1.
Roadworks and Diversion Details
The closure is necessary to facilitate several utility diversion works in preparation for the upcoming Crossrail project. Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times, but motorists will face restrictions. North Church Street will only be accessible from Callaghan Square, while Maria Street will only be accessible from the southern end of Bute Street. Lane reductions in Callaghan Square will remain in place throughout the works. Additionally, there will be no vehicle access to North Church Street between 9pm on Friday, July 24, and 6am on Monday, July 27.
Cardiff Council has apologised for any inconvenience caused to motorists but insists the work is being carried out as quickly as possible to minimise disruption. A council spokesperson said: "We understand the frustration these closures cause, but these essential utility diversions are vital for the future Crossrail project. We are working to complete them as efficiently as we can."
Impact on Local Traffic
The closure is expected to cause delays in the area, particularly for commuters and residents accessing Cardiff Bay. Alternative routes via Callaghan Square and other surrounding roads are advised. The council has urged motorists to plan their journeys in advance and allow extra travel time.
